Jake’s DJ history
I started DJing 3 years ago until the wing of DJ Damian (another member of the Kent Wedding DJ team). He showed me the ropes & in his words “saw potential” in me. Within a few months I left to my own devices & have not looked back!
The technical side of DJing I found easy to master, I always understood the principles of mixing. The other side is getting the right music, I always listen to the couple or host and observe the dance floor throughout the night.
Before I started DJing I had a keen ear for music as well as having a huge selection of music in my music library. I also love live music gigs & enjoy watching the DJ’s to learn more and more.
Jake’s Questions & Answers
Why do you DJ weddings? “DJing is not my full-time job. I do it because I genuinely enjoy it. Especially during wedding season. I love the variety of experiences gained DJing weddings and the array of happy couples I get to meet.”
What type of music do you play & what is your style of Djing? “First and foremost, as a DJ I work for the couple who booked me. Ultimately, my aim is to play the tunes that the happy couple want to hear. But as for me specifically? I am extremely eclectic. I really enjoy mixing genres together that you’d never hear on the radio. My go-to include Garage, Dance, Soul, Motown, and Indie.”
Is there any style of music you’d like to play more of at weddings? “As I say, I can have a great night playing pretty much anything but if I could drop in some ‘JazzHouse’ that would be unreal! It’s not a genre you hear very often but there’s something about a jazz piano or jazzy trumpet that just mixes so beautifully with a house beat and baseline.”
Do you DJ other events? “I am 90% a wedding DJ but I have done several birthday parties, corporate events, anniversaries and even a baby shower - I didn’t know baby showers required a DJ either but if you need me, I am there!”
Most important piece of DJ equipment & why? “Possibly an obvious answer but it has to be my laptop. I always have three options for DJing just in case there are any IT issues, but my laptop is my lifeline. It holds thousands of downloaded music across every genre you can imagine. If all else failed, my laptop would get me through.”
Do you take requests when DJing? “Absolutely. Its your party, its your night. I am very good at what I do but if you want to hear something specific or fancy a different vibe just ask.”
What is the most important skill a DJ needs? “People skills 100%. Anyone can learn to mix music to a degree. Don’t get me wrong, doing it well is hard otherwise we would all be headlining top Ibiza night clubs. But as a DJ you have to be able to talk to couples, families of couples, guests and other wedding service providers. It is my job to make sure the day/night flows without an ounce of stress being felt by the two people we’re there to celebrate. And above all, it’s a skill to read the dance floor and work out what will and won’t work. It’s my job to keep the party going and that is something I pride myself on.”
Where are you based, where do you cover? “I’m currently based in North Kent, but I am happy to travel all over Kent and even into Southeast London, Essex and parts of Surrey.”
