DJ DAmian
Damian’s DJ history
Hi I’m Damian and I first started playing out in 1990 when I was fifteen, I begin as a rodie for a successful local DJ setting up and packing away playing at singles nights around Kent progressing on to doing the warm up sets and learning the ropes of entertaining a crowd. I did this for three years until in 1993 deciding to go solo with starting my own company SoundWaves. By 1996 I was playing regular local venues and had gained a good following.
I gaining two major wedding venues as clients, one of which (The Knowle, Higham) I still perform the majority of the bookings.
In 1997 I got into local radio for a short time playing on two stations for the next two years durning afternoon slots.
From 1999 I had moved all my work onto the wedding side of the industry playing on average four weddings a week along with working at a local DJ equipment and insulation company part time.
I also took over in this year the running of the DJs at two night clubs and played myself the later sets after weddings, this continued until 2003.
I took a small break in 2004 to work in Greece to play a season in Kavos to experience the holiday club scene which I enjoyed but longed to get back to the weddings.
On returning I regained a major wedding venue and also ran quiz nights at large Kent venues with numbers exceeding 400 participants at times. I ran the quiz nights until 2017, I then took on a large contract to oversee the running of three wedding venues and still having my own permanent venue, I decided to concentrate solely on weddings once again.
Bringing me to today and somewhere around 3500 weddings perform at now taking control of daytime playing and hosting as well the evenings.
I’ve now been in the business 35 years and have never thought about doing anything else!
Damian’s Questions & Answers
Why do you DJ weddings? “Although I’ve played all sorts of different occasions I keep coming back to weddings as I know a great dj can really make the difference to having the best day of your life’s and I love being a part of that, club nights come and go and age related party’s are great but your wedding day stays with you forever and being part of that has always kept me wanting to be a part of it.”
What type of music do you play & what is your style of Djing? “So it’s hard to sum up that question as over the years and with the introduction of streaming the accessible music has blow up and so the best way to say it would be my style is let the music do the work … I hardly speak apart from vital information as I let the music flow with beat matching from all styles and genres, I consider myself to be a master of reading a crowd and working to there rhythm. Although in saying that if a coupe have a vision of the sound they’re looking for I’ll work any list to experience to make it work the very best it can be.”
Is there any style of music you’d like to play more of at weddings? “I feel it’s a major part of a djs job to bring new and exciting twists on well known or new music and so I love to play remixes or new versions if they fit the occasion.
Sometimes the original is the perfect version but every now and again a new version can absolutely make the highlight of the dance floor.”
Do you DJ other events? “In my time I’ve DJ’ed pretty well every type of event that’s out there and still from time to time like play a club night or Birthday but mostly these days I still very happy to be at a wedding.”
Most important piece of DJ equipment & why? “That’s definitely now days my iPad Pro.. I’ve been using it as the main source for 3 years now and it’s an absolute game changer. It allows me access to the entire worlds music catalog and seamlessly string them all together with all the tricks of track manipulation built in.
I still love my records but they are now a home passion, digital changed the performance game forever and my iPad is the heart .”
Do you take requests when DJing? “Yes definitely, it’s important to keep contact with your crowd after all it’s there night and I’m there to give them just want they want … ”
What is the most important skill a DJ needs? “To read the floor and keep it moving, all situations are different and every performance is unique, a good dj needs to know which tracks in which order are going to build up the atmosphere to make the night the very best it can be.”
Where are you based, where do you cover? “I’m based in Medway, Kent but I’m happy to travel wherever, I have a fully portable rig and transport to bring me to any venue that I can play in.”
